Mikhail Gorbachev Hosts Emotional, Star-Studded Event in Leipzig, Germany

The style of home we live in, the way it's decorated, looked after, and the way we furnish it is as much a reflection of who we are as the way we dress. And when it comes to selling the home these 'hidden' messages can be all important.

LEIPZIG, Germany, Dec. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Teri Hatcher was among 10 recipients of the second annual Women's World Awards, honored for their extraordinary achievements in a variety of fields. During a star-studded and emotional ceremony in Leipzig, Germany on November 29, host Mikhail Gorbachev presented awards to Ms. Hatcher and other prizewinners, who included Benazir Bhutto, Linda Evangelista, Donatella Versace, Catherine Deneuve and Lisa Stansfield.

The event, which attracted an array of international celebrities and more than 250 television teams and journalists, paid tribute to the unique contributions of the winners as inspirational role models for millions of women around the world. Ms. Hatcher, star of the hit TV show, "Desperate Housewives," said, "It is remarkable that something as simple as television can empower us to create change and awareness in the world. I am blessed to be able to work at a job I love and also give back in the most vital way -- to people in need." Mr. Gorbachev, Nobel Peace Prize laureate, former president of the Soviet Union, and current president of the World Awards Organization, presented the following awards, which are also sponsored by Superfund Investment Group, to the recipients:

Catherine Deneuve (World Arts Award for Lifetime Achievement) Benazir Bhutto, former prime minister of Pakistan (World Tolerance Award) Sabine Christiansen, Germany's leading television host (World Media Award) Donatella Versace (World Fashion Award) Alison Lapper, who has challenged society's preconceptions on disability (World Achievement Award) Linda Evangelista (World Style Icon Award) Lisa Stansfield (World Arts Award) Teri Hatcher (World Actress Award) The mothers of SOS Children's Village (Women of the Year Award) Sarah Ferguson, The Duchess of York (World Social Award)

The highly emotional awards ceremony brought tears to the eyes of guests and honorees. Among the distinguished speakers was Claudia Roth, former German Human Rights Commissioner, who said, "It is only right to honor the achievements of women in general. I think it is an excellent idea that women from very different areas are awarded this prize, and I am especially happy for having been given the chance to speak here today and praise the accomplishments of these special women." Ms. Bhutto, in accepting her award, commented, "For me personally, this is a very special moment. But, even more, I think it is an important moment for all women and the politics of tolerance all over the world." Margarete Gehring, from the SOS Children's Village in Lech Ammersee, accepted the honor on behalf of the 5,500 mothers of the SOS Children's Villages around the world, who give permanent homes and stable environment to children who have lost their parents or can no longer live with them. She said, "It is humbling and gratifying to receive such an honor from such a great man. It inspires us to do more." Among the other notables who spoke or performed at the event were Christopher Lee ("Lord of the Rings"); Klaus Meine from the rock band "The Scorpions"; Christina Stuermer, Austria's top female singer; and Germany's leading television host Arabella Kiesbauer. Here below are some of the reasons why buyers may be put off when visiting your home.

1. Welcoming Entrance - First Impression Matters

As has often been said, the first impression is the most lasting. It is as important, if not more, for your house to look good from the outside as it is to look from the inside. A prospective buyer wouldn't be too impressed with an unkempt yard, unpainted exteriors or a chipped off front door. Get everything in order and in a position to show before putting your house on the market.

2. Odors

Cigarettes, pets and whatever else that may have your home smell in an unpleasant manner should be, at best, avoided. Although, it doesn't mean that you spray perfume all over. A clean and fresh atmosphere is what is required.

3. Pets

Some buyers may not appreciate seeing pets at home. Some may be frightened or some may be irritated. You wouldn't want your pets to be the cause of their distraction. Get your pets away while the buyers are there and let them see your house with nothing coming in the way.

4. Dirty Bathrooms

The heading says it all. You should know what needs to be done.

5. Dark Rooms

Dark homes are a turnoff to most home buyers. Install additional light fixtures, if required. Draw open the drapes when the buyers come over. And do whatever it takes, to make your home seem more bright and welcoming.

6. Damp Basements

Dampness or damp smells in the basement may cause your buyer to think that the basement leaks even if it doesn't truly leak. Fix any leaks, if at all and ensure that whatever the source of the dampness, it be dealt with. It may be caused by rainwater or the underground drains being blocked. Have it checked.

7. Don't Hang Around for Showings

Leave the house during showings or stay away from the buyers while they go through your home. They may feel awkward about opening closet doors and taking a really good look at the house if you move around with them all over the house.
